This large beaker was a common drinking vessel. He has two horseshoe-shaped handles and is sometimes denominated as kotyle.
The skyphos of our collection contains about 2,5 liter, but other vessels of this type can have a capacity up to 8 liter. The two pictures on the forefront and the backside are coherent to each other. A young man with a lyre is waiting for a hetaera to accompany him to a symposium. The young man wears a coat and in his hair he has a bandage. The lyre, a stringed instrument, is decorated with a taenia. Above this figure is the inscription “KALOS” (beautiful).
The girl is depicted in current movement. She wears a chiton and a coat. Her headgear, the sakkos, denotes her as a hetaera. The inscription “KALE” is the female term of “beautiful”.
